vCIO

What does a virtual CIO actually do — and do you need one?

IT support fixes today's problems. A virtual CIO makes sure you're spending on the right things for the next three years. Here's what the role really involves.

Large companies have a Chief Information Officer: a senior person whose job is to make sure technology supports the business plan, stays within budget, and doesn't expose the company to unnecessary risk. Small and mid-sized businesses need the same thinking, just not 40 hours a week of it. That's what a virtual CIO provides.

What a vCIO actually does

  • Technology roadmap: a one- to three-year plan of what to upgrade, replace, or adopt, tied to your business goals.
  • IT budgeting: a realistic yearly budget, so laptop replacements and license renewals stop being surprises.
  • Risk and compliance: identifying where you're exposed and preparing you for Data Privacy Act obligations, client security questionnaires, and audits.
  • Vendor management: evaluating software, negotiating with ISPs and suppliers, and making sure you're not paying for things you don't use.
  • Business reviews: regular plain-language meetings with the owner or management team about what's working and what's next.

vCIO vs IT support: what's the difference?

IT support and the helpdesk are about keeping things running: fixing the printer, resetting a password, patching servers. A vCIO is about direction: should we move to the cloud, which accounting system scales with us, how much should we budget next year, are we ready for that enterprise client's security audit? You need both. Without strategy, support becomes an endless cycle of firefighting. Without support, strategy stays on paper.

Signs you need one

  • IT spending feels unpredictable, with big unplanned purchases every year
  • You're about to open a new branch, hire significantly, or move offices
  • A client, investor, or insurer is asking questions about your security you can't answer
  • You've bought software that nobody uses, or tools that don't talk to each other
  • You want to adopt automation or AI but don't know where to start safely
  • Your current IT provider fixes things but never tells you what's coming

What it costs compared to a full-time CIO

A full-time senior IT executive is out of reach for most SMBs, and frankly unnecessary. A vCIO gives you the same strategic thinking for a few hours a month, usually bundled into a managed IT plan. At ALM, vCIO strategy and quarterly roadmap reviews are part of our Enterprise plan, and available as standalone consulting for businesses that already have internal IT staff.
